Brown Saltman Coffee Table

A vintage, mid-century expandable coffee table by Brown Saltman, offered by Snowdrift Antiques.
 
This is a beautiful mid-century expandable coffee table that was made by Brown-Saltman of Los Angeles in the 1960s. Brown-Saltman was formed in the 1940s and sold beautiful and recognizable midcentury furniture in a variety of designs until close of business in the 1970s. The company's tag line was "Live in the Modern Mode". This table was designed by John Keal, one of the many talented designers at Brown-Saltman that went on to be recognized as important designers of the time.
 
Underneath this piece there is an ink stamp. It must have been the first piece the stamp was used on after inking because the stamp was loaded with ink and most of the mark is smudged and illegible.  Making my best guess, it might say, Sep ?2 1962 or 1968?. The model number is 8207.
 
This coffee table is an expandable table, letting you adjust the length as needed.  The table is made of a beautiful walnut veneer. When it is expanded the center section is recessed 1 inch and reveals a black Formica surface. This will allow glasses and other items to be safely set there without harming the wood. 
 
The table length measures 66 inches when closed and can be expanded up to 95 inches. It is 24 inches wide. The surface of the table is 15 inches high. It is attached to 2 cubes underneath that measure 12” x 12”.
 
The top of this table had a couple of careless water rings on it. They obviously didn’t use the Formica as it was intended. It has been painstakingly refinished to its original beauty. There was a very small (~ ¾   x ½ “) veneer chip on the edge of one end. It has been repaired. See image 9. It slides easily. It is in excellent vintage condition.
 
This is a very hard to find piece of mid-century furniture from a short-lived maker. It will be a focal point in any space it occupies.
